I always find that the end result is easy for me to envision, but getting into the details makes me feel nervous. Getting started is seemingly easier said than done.
I have realized time and time again that once I get over the getting started hump, everything else seems to fall in place.
Here are ways that I use to encourage myself to get started:
- Plan
- Create a list
- Identify your why
- Find a support system
- Set reminders
- Go for it!
Create a Plan
Put pen to paper and set a plan in place. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Just jot down a few sentences on what you want to do and what you want to accomplish. Seeing it written down can help give you the motivation to start. Remember that what you write down is not permanent, and you can change things up as you see fit.
Make a List
Make lists on what needs to be done before beginning; what materials (if any) need to be gathered; people that need to be contacted; etc.
Cross things off the list as they get done. Give yourself a pat on the back as you go along. Each thing that you knock off the list gets you closer to your goal.
Figure Out Your Why
Think about your reasons for why you’re setting this goal. Having a reason for your goal can help keep you motivated to keep going. If your goal is to lose weight, a reason could be to get healthier or to maintain a healthy blood pressure. Whatever your reason is, be sure to write it down. Come back to it when you need a reminder or motivation.
Find a Support System
Tell someone about your goal, and ask that they hold you accountable. When asking, be sure to define what would be helpful. For example, if you need a more hands off approach, you can suggest gentle check-ins here and there. Or if you need them to be a bit more attentive, you can suggest daily check-ins. A simple text message works!
Having a support system will help keep you focused. It helps to lean on someone!
Set Reminders
Set reminders for yourself about tasks that need to get done and/or milestones. I find it helpful to set reminders using my phone’s alarm clock and on my calendar. You can even set reminders to take a break or give yourself a pat on the back. Cheesy, but effective! 🙂
Go for it!
You might have heard this before, but it’s true, so I have to repeat it. You’re never going to feel 100% ready! Start anyway.
It’s slightly poetic that my first blog post is about getting started. I’m trying to motivate myself to go past my fear and to simply take action. The first step is always the hardest, but once you get past it, it gets easier to keep going.
Go for it! I’m rooting for ya. 🙂
